A Russian millionaire and his ex-wife have agreed Britain’s biggest ever divorce settlement.
At the High Court in July, Boris Berezovsky and Galina Besharova agreed a settlement estimated at between £165 million and £220 million, although the exact figure has not been disclosed. Mr Berezovsky’s fortune has been estimated at £550 million.
Richard Todd QC, representing Miss Besharova, told the court that the parties "had worked very hard to reach an amicable settlement". They have two children and had been married for 18 years, although they separated after two.
Judge Mrs Justice Eleanor King said she was “very happy” to approve the order making the settlement. She added: “It does not matter whether the awards are thousands of pounds or hundreds of millions of pounds.
“If the husband and wife can reach (an) agreement they can both live with, it bodes much better for their future welfare and for the children of the family.”
Victoria Daniell, head of the Family department at Gregg Latchams and a collaborative family practitioner – trained specialists who work with couples who are separating or divorcing to resolve disputes without going to court – said: “As the judge has pointed out, it is in the best interests of everyone concerned if the parties involved in a divorce, or the dissolution of a civil partnership, can put aside their differences to reach agreement.
“The break-up of any relationship is very sad for those affected and the people close to them but working with experienced family law solicitors can help to resolve issues constructively and in a way that minimises stress and anxiety.”
