Meet Michelle - Principal Conveyancer at Gregg Latchams

Alan Sugar, Caribbean cocktails and Hermione Grainger’s time turner: find out what makes GL’s principal conveyancer and working mum Michelle Reed tick.

First job?
My first legal job was in a general law practice in London for 3 days a week whilst I was studying for my law degree at Brunel University.

How long have you been working as a Licensed Conveyancer? How long with GL?
I joined GL in 2007 and qualified 9 months later as a Licensed Conveyancer.

Trickiest thing about being a working mum?
Fitting everything in in order that I can continue to give a top quality service to my clients and also be an attentive mother. Let’s just say my family calendar is a god send!

What makes you smile?
The random and funny phrases my 3 year old son comes out with.

What does your role at GL involve?
I have a diverse role in acting for clients in the purchase and or sale of a property, remortgages, a transfer of a share in a property, creation of leases and anything else which will land on my desk. In acting for clients purchasing a property I will carry out searches on the property, raise enquiries with the sellers solicitor, produce a report on the property, and meet with the client to advise them on the property. Once my clients are happy to purchase the property I proceed to exchange of contracts and completion of the transaction and attend to the registration of the property in my clients name. I also attend marketing events to generate business for the department. I investigate and report on new IT solutions for the department to ensure we are at the cutting edge of technology in order to provide excellent service to clients and third parties.

Best bit of the job?
I really enjoy helping my clients through the conveyancing process, from start to finish. I like to be involved at all stages so that I can understand and be on hand to assist in the event of any problems. Of course, being involved from the start makes it easier to pre-empt problems before they arise. Some transactions can become complex and give clients additional stress, but I hope that my natural and friendly manner gives people the confidence to ask me any questions, and rely on me for help.

Describe your ideal house.
A farmhouse in the Welsh valleys with about 5 acres of land.

What superpower would you like to have?
The ability to be in two places at the same time. Hermione’s time turner (from the Harry Potter series) would be priceless.

Where would you like to be right now?
On a beach in the Caribbean enjoying a cocktail and a good book with family and friends.

Grand Designs or Location, Location, Location?
A no-brainer: Grand designs. I enjoy seeing other people’s design ideas for properties and it is my dream to design my own home on a farm in the Welsh valleys.

Quality you admire
Persistence or determination. Whatever field you’re in, it’s the ability to keep going against the odds which will determine your success.

I never leave the house without...
My phone and my son!

Who would you most like to meet?
Sir Alan Sugar.

Who inspires you?
Any successful individual that has created their own fortune through hard work and determination.
