A new survey has found that the vast majority of people would opt to use a traditional law firm to handle divorce work.
The research, published in June by Manchester-based RTS Media, was carried out ahead of the introduction of alternative business structures (ABS) in October this year.
Under the ABS regime – dubbed “Tesco law” – businesses owned by non-lawyers, such as supermarkets and banks, will be able to provide legal services.
The RTS Media Legal Services Survey 2011, published in June, found that 83 per cent of 500 adults polled would prefer to use a law firm to deal with a divorce.
The survey also found that 43 per cent of consumers said a personal recommendation would be the most persuasive factor in selecting a lawyer.
Victoria Daniell, head of Gregg Latchams’ Family department , said: “The findings of this survey underline the fact that when it comes to divorce, people want the reassurance of working with a solicitor specialising in this field.
“Even the most amicable of divorces can be stressful and emotionally draining at times, so knowing that you have an experienced divorce solicitor who is a member of Resolution and committed to a constructive approach to guide and advise you can help to make the process much less daunting.”
