Are takeaways the answer to pubs and restaurants surviving COVID-19?

With the Government’s recent advice against the public attending pubs and restaurants, some establishments have opted to deliver food as part of a takeaway offer.

This transition was made easier for publicans following the Government’s announcement on the 17th March 2020, that they have relaxed planning rules for pubs and restaurants to operate as takeaways during the Coronavirus period.

This is a great opportunity for businesses to secure a steady income during these uncertain times. This measure is one of the most recent in a series of practical steps taken by the Government to support the food and hospitality industry, whilst equally helping people to self-isolate if they need to.

What steps should businesses take to offer a delivery or take away service?

  • If you want to also sell alcohol for takeaway or delivery you need to ensure you have off sales already authorised on your premise licence. You will need to liaise with your local council and possibly apply for your licence conditions to be varied.
  • Does your premise licence cover late night refreshment- ie for food between 11pm-5am
  • How would you deal with age verification? Operators will need a robust system to age verify customers when selling alcohol
  • Making sure staff and customers remain safe and avoiding transmitting COVID-19
  • Will you be allowing customers the option to use Deliveroo type Apps to pre-order?
  • Are you able to establish a drive through service?
