The Crumbs Awards finalist Q&A series - Ivy House Farm

The prestigious  Crumbs Awards 2019 are nearly upon us! These awards celebrate the very best in food and hospitality in Bristol, Bath and the surrounding areas.

The Crumbs Awards is brought to life by the Crumbs Magazine, a publication committed to raising awareness of the region’s buzzing food and drink culture. In the run up to the awards, we will be sitting down with the finalists of our sponsored category to find out a little more about them.

This week we sat down with Geoff Bowles of Ivy House Farm.

Ivy House Farm

When did you start your business?

We started our business in the January of 2000. The reason behind this was that we realised we could not compete in the high yielding, high numbers game that dairy farming was becoming. Since this we have grown and grown, even becoming part of the Stewardship Scheme, meaning we are dedicated to re introducing wildlife back to the countryside, working to promote a healthier and happier environment for all animals.

What does this award mean to you?

It’s great to have the recognition that hard work and farming can reap rewards. Small family farms can thrive in the right environment.

Have you been part of the Crumbs Awards before?

No, but we extremely happy to be a finalist and recognised for the hard work that goes into the farm on a daily basis.

What is a general day like at Ivy House Farm?

Hectic! There is four parts to our business. We get the cows in for milking at 5.30 am & warm milk starts coming into the creamery at 6.30 am. The creamery starts at 7.00 am when we make all our products to order from that milk. As farmers we try to be as efficient as possible and each production process is integrated with the other. Next comes the ordering and delivery, every customer has their own requirements, and we do our very best to accommodate them, every product is made to order. Then finally the paperwork, each area has a raft of inspections, accreditations, procedures and protocols, this is probably the most difficult of all, my wife runs this.  

What is your favourite thing about your job?  

It’s great to have a day when everything goes according to plan and knowing that we treat our animals kindly, but what makes working at Ivy House Farm even better is the staff and customers we have.
