Melissa Toney joined Gregg Latchams in January 2020 to lead the Regulatory & Licensing team, she is an experienced Higher Rights of Audience Advocate and has been qualified for over 14 years. Melissa has specialist technical expertise in professional disciplinary proceedings as well as challenges to regulatory and licencing decisions on appeal, with the capacity to advise in respect of parallel criminal investigations and prosecutions, inquests and disciplinary inquiries.
Highly experienced in licensing law, Melissa helps operators in the food, drink and hospitality industry with the monitoring of licences, especially with regards to the sale of alcohol, as well as the running of indoor and outdoor sporting and cultural events. Melissa has an interest in sports law and regularly advises sports people, organisations and coaches. She is committed to the cost-effective resolution of sports-related disputes, specifically in areas of regulation, governance, anti-doping, stadia licensing, policing and event organisation.
Melissa comes with a wealth of experience from her time as a Regulatory Lawyer at Bristol City Council who is the Lead Enforcement Agency (LEA) for the Tenant Fees Act 2019. In addition to being the exclusive Regulatory Lawyer to the Private Housing Enforcement Team she was a lawyer within the National Trading Standards Estate and Letting Agency Team and was intricate in the drafting of the LEA’s Enforcement Guidance and Toolkit, as well as BCC’s Penalty Policy.
